Shafeeq Al Ghabra Scholarship for the
Academic Year 2024/2025

11 July 2024

Yara Al Shawwa from Gaza Strip is the first recipient of Shafeeq Al Ghabra Scholarship for Political Science at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies. Yara obtained a bachelor’s degree in Law in English Language from Al-Azhar University in Gaza in 2023. She chose to study a master’s degree in human rights because she strongly believes in the importance of this field and its direct relevance to the Palestinian context and the current situation in Gaza.

Since graduating from university, Yara has been actively involved in various volunteer initiatives aimed at supporting women and youth. These experiences have inspired her to champion the rights of marginalized communities. Yara was engaged in numerous awareness campaigns promoting democracy and human rights in Palestine and internationally. Through her participation in the Student Leader Program in the USA, she collaborated on developing a detailed Community Engagement Plan, particularly emphasizing the empowerment of women in the agriculture industry. Throughout her volunteer work, Yara has consistently prioritized youth empowerment and the advancement of entrepreneurs within the Palestinian community.

Commenting on winning the master’s degree scholarship at Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, Yara said, “I am enthusiastic about the opportunity to study at Doha Institute and take advantage of all the available academic and research opportunities provided there. I also feel a sense of duty towards my country, which is why I chose to pursue my studies in this field, to advocate for the rights of Palestinians on all international platforms.”

Upon announcing the first recipient of Shafeeq Al Ghabra Scholarship for Political Studies, Rana Diab, the Executive Director of Qaddumi Foundation, said, “Over time, Dr. Ghabra will be remembered as a symbol of Palestinian strength and an inspiration for future generations. The Qaddumi Foundation chose to establish this scholarship at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies to honor the memory and impact of Dr. Ghabra, and to assist talented Palestinians in following the resilient journey towards creating a brighter future for their community.”

The Qaddumi Foundation started accepting applications for the master’s degree scholarship at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies in September 2023. This scholarship is open for the Political Science program or related specializations such as Conflict Resolution, Humanitarian Work, and Human Rights programs, commencing in the academic year 2024/2025.

The Qaddumi Foundation launched Shafeeq Al Ghabra Scholarship for Political Science to honor Dr. Ghabra’s commitment to advocating the Palestinian cause and other national issues in the Arab region. In partnership with the Doha Institute, the Foundation established an agreement to award an annual scholarship to an exceptional Palestinian candidate residing in Palestine, enabling them to continue their studies at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies.

It is important to mention that the late Shafeeq Al Ghabra, an academic from Palestine and Kuwait, was born and raised in Kuwait. He completed his studies in Political Science at Georgetown University and went on to establish a successful academic career. Dr. Ghabra served as the Founding President of the American University of Kuwait, Director of the Center for Strategic Studies at Kuwait University, and Director of the Kuwait Information Office in Washington, D.C. Additionally, as a respected scholar, Ghabra was the Editor-in-Chief of the Social Sciences Magazine at Kuwait University and authored seven books along with numerous research articles.
